My wife Eileen worked at Dillard's and they would annually gather volunteers to serve food at the Ronald McDonald House. This often heard about, but rarely seen building offers 50 rooms for families of children awaiting organ transplants, experimental procedures, and life saving miracles. She had volunteered with a dozen others, but on the morning they were scheduled to go, only her manager and his sister showed up. Eileen called me early in the morning, and true to my statement "God always wraps your blessing in packages you don't want to open", I reluctantly agreed to crawl out of bed and help. My life perspective changed when I walked into this place of healing, care and love. Immediatly my problems became trivial, and God opened my eyes to what is truly important in life. If it changed me, it would change others and I signed us up three years ago to do ongoing ministry there.
This was the first regular outreaches of the Lighthouse and was met with some opposition from the church because we were serving outside our local community. The thought process was "how will this grow the church" It turned out to radically change the attitudes of the members of our church and became the most supported outreach we do at the Lighthouse.
We go every other month and donate food pantry items and toiletries, provide and serve a giant home cooked dinner for 80 residents and staff, do creative crafts for the kids, and most importantly pray individually for needs of the families. In the month of December we add Santa pictures and gift bags prepared by our children's church. Our church has witnessed miracle after miracle of God's healing mercy to those the doctors gave little or no hope to.
